Stand Alone System
Revised 2017-02-03
Rx-Universe
Stand Alone System (One PC) Requirements
The detailed requirements below are only intended for the “Stand Alone” Workstation scenario.
If you are going to run Rx-Universe on more than one computer, please see the “Multi-Workstation Requirement” section.
If you are considering installing Rx-Site, you will need to use a true Windows Server and will need to use the “Multi-Workstation Requirement” section.
Stand Alone Workstation Requirements
Hardware:
- Windows Operating System (32 bit/64Bit);
- Windows 7 Pro, Windows 8 Pro, Windows 10 Pro.
- “Home” versions of Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 10 are not supported.
- Windows Server 2016, Windows Server 2019.
- It is up to the customer to determine the version/license that best suits their needs and environment. However, Rx-Universe will not run on "Core" editions due to the lack of a Desktop environment.
- Rx-Universe will run on Windows 11 and Windows Server 2022. However these platforms have not been extensively tested for stability.
- Windows 7 Pro, Windows 8 Pro, Windows 10 Pro.
- Minimum 4 GB of RAM. (Consider a min of 8 GB for windows 10)
- Processor operating at 2.0 GHz or higher (Multiple-core processor operating at 2.33 GHz recommended)
- Available hard disk space as calculated (see section on “estimating hard disk capacity")
- Virus protection software (such as Symantec, AVG, McAfee, etc)
- The PC MUST have internet access to provide support staff the ability to connect to the PC using Teamviewer.
- Create an Administrator user “omics” on the PC (with the password “omics”) with full access to the “RXUNIVERSE” folder and subfolders.
- One USB port available for the Rx-Universe security dongle.
Network & Communication
- (LAN) Local Static TCP/IP address is required if interfacing the devices (machines) through a TCP/IP connection.
- To enable remote support by Rx-Universe, or outside access via thin-client, a static IP or DNS must be provided, and port# 5640 must be opened on the router and forwarded to the Rx-Universe computer.
- If the router blocks both incoming and outgoing connections, port# 6523 must be open for outgoing connections to allow updates of programs, lens data, manufacturer report specifications, Eyefinity translations, etc.
Device Interfaces
The Rx-Universe Device Interface is used for data communication between the different surfacing and finishing machines and Rx-Universe. There are two different methods of data interface communication in Rx-Universe. Both communication methods can be used on the same computer or just one method or the other:
- With TCP/IP, you can run normal network cable (RJ45) from your network router to your devices just like connecting up a Workstation on your network. This is becoming more and more common with the newer ophthalmic machines.
- With a Serial Port; A device workstation accepting requests by serial connection must have enough serial ports available for the devices to be connected. This can be accomplished with serial ports directly in the computer or by means of an external multi-port serial adapter. Note that each job tracking scanner used in the lab also must connect to a device workstation by a serial connection.
Backup system (Tape, External USB Disk Drive, web-based backup, etc…).
OMICS Software Inc. recommends that you have proper backup and recovery procedures in place for your Rx-Universe system and its data files as part of a disaster recovery plan (DRP). You are responsible for providing adequate backups to ensure the recovery of your Rx-Universe system and its data files in the event of a failure of a system failure and or data lost & corruption.
OMICS Software Inc. highly recommends that you consult your current IT provider to help you organize and plan a proper disaster recovery plan (DRP) based on the below examples of a suggested preferred best practices:
- A daily backup procedure
- An off-site backup procedure
- A minimum 14 days backup retention.
- A daily off-site rotation
- A routine monitoring and testing of backup systems
Estimating Hard Disk Capacity
Hard disk capacity will vary depending on which Rx-Universe modules are active, how much job history you care to retain, and the amount of time the history is saved on your system. The following hard disk space estimates will provide adequate capacity for most labs using our complete management solution, and saving all orders with complete job history and frame traces for 5 years.
Jobs per day | Total disk space req’d |
50 to 100 | 20 Gig |
100 to 350 | 40 Gig |
350 to 750 | 60 Gig |
750 to 1000 | 100 Gig |
1000+ | 150 Gig |
