Introduction

This document provides instructions for accessing the calculation options screen in Rx Order Entry. Definitions for each are listed below.

Procedure

From the Optifacts main menu:              

Select Option 4 - Order Entry and press Enter.

  • Continue to enter the Tray & Acct. information.
  • At the Style w/Seg Sz field, Enter the applicable style and press Enter.
  • Press the F2 key to activate the calculation options screen.

Pressing too early will result in this screen showing features that may not apply once you enter a Lens Type. Any feature activated (highlighted) that does not apply to this lens type gets ignored. Best to activate after assigning the Lens Type.

Field Definitions

2 MRP Blocking

  • Override normal surfacing blocking and use MRP (Major Reference Point) blocking. Calculations are done for MRP blocking if on.  If not highlighted, calculations are done for on-center blocking.  Typically, the configuration settings determine this option, but it can be changed on a job-by-job basis.

3 Molded Block

  • Only for lenticular style lenses. If active, calculates generator thickness based on a computed (pseudo) carrier curve and bowl curve average. Otherwise, calculates generator thickness based on carrier curve only. This option used to be activated on lenticulars to calculate generator thickness.  We now utilize a measured 50mm sag to calculate the thickness on lenticulars so this option is no longer used.

4 Segment Prism

  • Activates DIA, 50MM SAG, BLANK IN, and SEG DOWN options in Layout. The technical information must be entered – equivalent to a one-shot or sag entry of the lens data.
    After entry of the technical data, frame information, and lite-ups, the system will display a screen for entry of NEAR HOR PRISM. This is the desired effect. After entering the needed amount (displayed in NEAR PRISM NEEDED field), the NEAR
    PRISM USED (what to order) will require entry. The system then displays a “Near Prism ok?” message for final verification. On acceptance, the job clears the screen. If the lenses used are not manufactured prism segs, the prism needed will be obtained by decentration.

5 New Fitting Distance

  • When active, brings up an additional screen for entry of the Refracted Distance and the Fitted Distance. Used when the refracted vertex distance is not the same as the fitting distance.  Optifacts will prompt you for both values and recalculate the effective power for each lens at the new vertex distance.  Typically used only when the doctor or optician specifies a vertex change for mid to high power prescriptions. The screen will display the corrections to the Rx and will process using these new values for Sphere and Cylinder.

6 Weak Power Compensation

  • Compensates when a group of Cr-39 lenses tend to flex more than usual when surfacing block is removed. Typical flex is to produce a flattened rear curve, resulting in weak powers. Use this option with great care, as it will alter the rear curves in conjunction with Flex Comp setting. (see Flex Comp and Min Flx C – in Lab Material Configuration) This option is currently not used because all flex compensation is handled through the configuration settings.

7 Fixed Center Thickness

  • Changes the use of the Edge Thickness field. Allows entry of specified center thickness on plus jobs where you do not want the system to calculate the center thickness. When this option is used, enter the center thickness you want in the Center/Edge thickness field:

 

8 Slab Off

  • When active, calculates the amount of slab prism, along with the eye to grind to correct for vertical imbalance. Note, this assumes the slab will be ground in the normal fashion.

9 Manuf. Slab Off Lens

  • When active, calculates the amount of slab prism, along with the eye to grind. This is the reverse of Slab Off listed above. Assumes this slab will be pre-ground by the manufacturer of the lens before delivery to the lab. Useful for reverse slab off lenses in CR-39 and ground slabs in glass materials made by Vision-Ease or X-Cel.

10 Enter Rx Slab Amnt

  • Override when using either Slab Off or Manuf. Slab Off Lens when the account has specified the amount of slab prism for this patient, rather than letting Optifacts calculate it for you.

11 Over Refraction

  • Only available for aspheric styles (lenticular and full-field cataract lenses). When active, brings up a screen to enter refractive changes. Calculates the resultant Rx power needed when the patient was refracted wearing a special lens kit of their original eyewear. Three methods are available: Whitney, Janelli, and Other. Very rarely used.

12 Resolved Prism

  • Allows entry of prescribed prism and angle (axis) as a compound prism/axis. (Rather than in/out, up/down). Uses the horizontal and vertical prism fields on entry screen. Horizontal receives the prism amount and the vertical field receives the axis of the prism. When this option is used, the screen looks the same, but the prism fields take on different meanings.   The Prism +I -O fields would be for entering the amount of prism while the  Prism +U -D fields  would be for entering the angle,  from 0-360 degrees.

13 Front Side Cylinder

  • For true front cylinder surface calculations. Blank used has the cylinder on the front of the lens.  This option is very seldom used as it was designed for lenses with a true plus cylinder on the front surface of the lens.

14 Prism Thinning

  • Only available if lens style is a Progressive or Executive type. When active turns on prism thinning for job to produce a more uniform thickness. This option is handled through the account configuration settings but can be turned on or off per individual job.  To turn prism thinning off, turn this option on and then off again.

15 Facet

  • Activates thickness control for proper thickness for facet-edged lenses, as defined in the Account/Lab Material Configuration for the lens material in use. This does not activate billing. That comes from Pricing Options (lite-up) on the entry screen.

16 String Groove

  • Activates thickness control for proper thickness for string groove-edged lenses, as defined in the Account/Lab Material Configuration for the lens material in use. This does not activate billing. That comes from Pricing Options (lite-up) on the entry screen.

17 Special Intermediate

  • Adjusts the thickness requirements for GLASS trifocal lenses when the intermediate seg power is not 50% of total add power. This is not tied to Inventory, so the system will not automatically select lenses with the special intermediate percentage.

18 Print Required Edge

  • The finished edge thickness at the THICKEST edge point for the frame data entered, and the axis location of that point prints on work ticket.

19 Match Edge Thickness

  • When active (lit), matches the edge thickness between the lenses, for weight and cosmetics when the lens powers differ between the right and left eye. Typically makes the stronger, plus powered lens thicker.

20 Color Match

  • Attempts to match edge/center thickness between eyes for matching color intensity on GLASS colored lenses. Full matching is performed on dark colors and half-matching of photochromatic. Useful if the power difference between the right and left cause one lens to be darker than the other. 

21 2 MM Pol. Thickness

  • Use when polaroid blanks are manufactured with the polaroid wafer matching the front curve, and it is less than 2 mm from the front of the lens. If not selected, the system calculates thickness to protect the wafer, assuming the worst-case wafer
    placement. This is typically handled by the configuration settings, but may be helpful to turn it on if the lenses ended up thicker than needed.  Only needed if Lab Material Configuration is set to (N) - See Pol 2 mm in Lab Material Configuration for additional information.

22 Caliper Blank Thickness

  • Prompts for entry of blank center thickness. Useful if you want to override the blank center thickness in the lens database, or if you are using a lens that is not in the database.  Also, used on old-style, manual generators.

23 Edger Via Circumference

  • If active, will prompt for old lens and pattern circumference – unless frame database has been used and contains a circumference. The differences will be used to calculate the edger setting. Thickness is not affected.

24 Xmit to Generator

  • To transmit these materials to interfaced generators. This field is automatically lit and used internally by Optifacts, and needs no further intervention.. Used in conjunction with active settings for Gerber Enable, Coburn Enable, and LOH Gen. These individual topics are found in Lab General Configuration (first two) and Lab Material Configuration (for LOH).

25 SV Prism Reduction

  • Center blocked SV lenses will grind the minimum amount of prism to achieve cutout if there is a blank available outside the frame edging line. Useful if you want to slide the optical center as much as possible to reduce or eliminate the need for ground prism.

26 SV/Exec Small Blank Comp

  • SV and direct decentered Executive lenses that are run with blanks too small will have the prism requirements (decentration prism) modified to move the MRP in an attempt to fit the frame within the blank, or to center the frame in a blank that is still too small.  Only useful if you are using the largest blank available and need to maximize the possibility of cutout.

27 Compute Slab Eye Only

  • Used if you are only making the lens with the slab off, but need to enter both lenses to calculate the slab off prism needed., for half-pair billing purposes. Does not decrement inventory on the non-slab lens. 

28 Slab at Bifocal Line

  • Forces the slab amount calculated and the line to bisect a trifocal at the bifocal line rather than the top of the intermediate line. Without this option, a trifocal slab line will be ground at the trifocal line.

29 Force Extra Thick Blank

  • This lite-up is not normally needed. When running a job manually (bypassing blank selection by specifying a manufacturer, diameter, base curve, etc. on entry), the program will normally retrieve a regular thickness blank. By turning on this flag, the system will only retrieve a lens, or lenses, that is classed as extra thick.  Useful if you need to force a lens in, but do not want to use the regular thickness lens.  This option does work with Inventory and will display the “lens not in database” message if the lens is not made as extra thick.

30 Flag to Split Eyes

  • This option is used internally by Optifacts and needs no intervention. This flag saves the job as separate records for the right and left. Creates two records out of a single Rx. The data is saved in the AR Transfer file with sufficient information without use of this flag.

31 Enter Prism Thin Diopter

  • Progressive lenses only, used in conjunction with option 14 Prism Thinning. When the operator enters past the Center/Edge Thickness field in order entry, they will be prompted to specify a prism thinning amount in diopters.

32 Enter Sag/True Curve

  • Used to force a sag value and true curve.


  • Once you have made your selections,  press Enter to exit the calc options screen.
