Installing Cisco VPN Client

The Cisco VPN client is normally distributed as a single .exe file, similar to the following:

On operating systems such as Windows Server 2016 and Windows 10, you will need to install the Citrix DNE Update software before installing the Cisco VPN.

Make sure to use the correct 32-bit or 64-bit of the VPN softwareinstall files, matching your system.  If you are unsure whether you have a 32-bit or 64-bit operating system, please consult your networking or IT personnel.

You should have install files for both similar to the following:

Install the "vpnclient" exe file using administrator rights (right click on the file, and select "Run as administrator"dneupdate64.msi file first (assuming a 64-bit operating system).

Following successful install of the DNE update, install the "vpnclient_setup.msi" file by double-clicking on the file.  You may be prompted to reboot your computer following installation.

Installing on a Windows 10 computer

On a Windows 10 computer, you will need to edit the system Once the Cisco VPN software is installed, install the IBM Websphere client - the C48UML.EXE.  Right-click and select "Run as Administrator", and follow the prompts for a "Typical" installation.

On a Windows 10 computer, you will need to edit the system registry to correct errors in the registry entries.

64bit: Remove the "@oem8.ifn,%CVirtA_Desc%;” so you just have “Cisco Systems VPN Adapter for 64-bit Windows”Exit the Registry Editor and launch the Cisco VPN Client software. Configure the application as needed to communicate with your organization's VPN server and test the connection.

Modify the default Environment Variable “PATH” to include the path that the Cisco VPN Client software was installed into – unfortunately, the Cisco software does not automatically place itself into the path. 

On Windows 2000 or XP computers, this is accomplished by right clicking on the “My Computer” icon on the desktop and selecting “Properties”.  Then select the Advanced tab and then press the “Environment Variables” button.  Under “System Variables”, highlight the “PATH” selections and press the EDIT button.  Add the Cicso Systems path to the end of the list; remember to separate this new addition from the other using a semi-colon.  The default installation path is “C:\Program Files\Cisco Systems\VPN Client”.  (Refer to your Windows user manuals for setting the PATH for other operating systems).

On Windows 10, click on the Windows button, start typing "Environment" and then select "Edit the system environment variables".  The following window should appear:

Click "Environment variables" to see a screen similar to:

Click on "Path" and then "edit" - add the path to the VPN client to the end of the path, for example:

Set Up Cisco VPN Client

Once the Cisco VPN software is installed, it needs to be configured for use with VisionWeb.  Open the Cisco VPN Client, you’ll see a screen similar to the following, and need to set it up as shown:

Create a new connection entry called Vision Web.

Host IPN is provided by Vision Web (66.45.81.5)

Group Authentication User / Password – this is the same for all OMICS users (Omics, 0Mic$#!)

Transport – set to Enable transparent tunneling as IPSec over UDP

Keep all of the other defaults

After you “Save” the settings, you’ll be back to the main VPN screen:

Double-click on the “Vision Web” connection entry; you’ll be presented with a window like:

The username and password will be assigned by VisionWeb, and are different for each customer.  The default (test) settings are Omicsuser1 and omic$uzer1.  Once you enter your username and password, you should be connected to the VisionWeb network.  If you want to test this, you should be able to ping address 192.168.12.162.

(Note that the FIRST time you access this screen, the “save password” box is not available – you must connect, disconnect, and connect again in order to be able to check the “save password” box).

Also, if the WebSphere install put quotes around the entries for its path, you will need to REMOVE those quote marks (for example, if it set “C:\Program Files\IBM\WebSphere MQ\bin”, you will need to change that to C:\Program Files\IBM\WebSphere MQ\bin.

Set Up OMICSAlso, if the WebSphere install put quotes around the entries for its path, you will need to REMOVE those quote marks (for example, if it set “C:\Program Files\IBM\WebSphere MQ\bin”, you will need to change that to C:\Program Files\IBM\WebSphere MQ\bin.  If the path to the WebSphere program is not in the path, you will need to add it, in addition to the path to the Cisco VPN software.

On Windows 10, click on the Windows button, start typing "Environment" and then select "Edit the system environment variables".  The following window should appear:

Set Up Cisco VPN Client

Once the Cisco VPN software is installed, it needs to be configured for use with VisionWeb.  Open the Cisco VPN Client, you’ll see a screen similar to the following:

Click the "New" button, and create an entry:

Set Up Rx-Universe

Setup the Vision Web default information.  From the Main menu select “Remote Order Entry”, then “Remote Order Processing”.  This will take you to the “Remote Order Processing Options” screen.  To allow access to the Vision Web options you must check the “Use Vision Web Interface” checkbox, and then press the “Vision Web Options” button.  This will take you to the Vision Web Options screen where you can setup the information to receive orders and, if you have activated the “Vision Web Lab-to-Lab” module, you can setup the information to send orders via Vision Web.
